Surfing in Bude & North Cornwall Beaches
Bude is one of the leading surfing destinations in North Cornwall and has long been recognised as a focal point of the UK surf scene. The coastline around Bude features long sandy beaches, powerful Atlantic swells and a mixture of beach breaks and reef breaks suitable for beginners, intermediate surfers and experienced riders.
From Widemouth Bay and Summerleaze Beach to the rugged surf breaks at Duckpool and Crackington Haven, the Bude area offers excellent surfing conditions throughout the year. Visitors will also find surf schools, surfboard hire, wetsuit rental, holiday accommodation and outdoor activity centres across the region, making Bude one of the best places in Cornwall for surfing holidays and surf lessons.
- Duckpool – One of the first major surf breaks on the north Cornwall coastline, Duckpool is a west-facing beach that receives consistent Atlantic swell. The beach works best around low tide and can produce quality surf conditions, although scattered rocks and strong rip currents make it unsuitable for beginners. Westerly winds can quickly affect wave quality, while north and south winds often create choppy conditions.
- Sandymouth Beach – Located just north of Bude, Sandymouth is a scenic west-facing beach known for its shifting sandbanks and powerful beach break waves. Conditions are best with light easterly winds, although wave quality can vary significantly depending on the tide and sandbank formation. Strong rip currents frequently develop during surf over 5ft, making this beach more suitable for experienced surfers.
- Northcott Mouth – Situated at the southern end of Sandymouth Beach, Northcott Mouth is a west-facing surf break capable of producing steep and punchy waves when conditions align. Rip currents can become dangerous during larger swells, although smaller surf conditions may suit intermediate surfers. The beach is accessible via Crooklets Beach or from the lane leading from Poughill.
- Crooklets Beach – One of Bude’s most popular surf beaches, Crooklets is a reliable west-facing break that works well on all tides and particularly benefits from easterly offshore winds. The beach is popular with local surfers and can produce quality right-hand waves near Wrangle Point at the northern end. Strong rip currents may occur during larger swells, especially around low tide.
- Summerleaze Beach – Located close to Bude town centre, Summerleaze Beach offers a variety of surf conditions depending on the tide. At low tide, fast left-hand waves can break outside the harbour wall, while rising tides create different surfable sections near the breakwater and sea pool. The beach can work well when nearby surf spots are blown out, although rip currents may develop during larger swells.
- Widemouth Bay – Widely regarded as the principal surfing beach in the Bude area, Widemouth Bay attracts surfers of all ages and abilities. This large west-facing beach works throughout the tidal range and is especially popular for beginner surf lessons and surf schools. Towards high tide the waves become steeper and more hollow, while early morning conditions often provide clean uncrowded surf. Surfboard hire, wetsuit rental and surf tuition are all available nearby.
Whether you are searching for beginner surf beaches in Bude, advanced reef breaks along the north Cornwall coast, or family-friendly surfing holidays with surf schools and equipment hire, the Bude area remains one of Cornwall’s premier surfing destinations.
