Roseland Peninsula Beaches

The Roseland Peninsula is one of Cornwall's quietest and most unspoilt corners - a finger of land between the Fal estuary and Veryan Bay, reached either by the King Harry Ferry or the long way round via Tregony, and all the better for it. This guide covers 15 beaches running roughly west to east: the Henrician fortress town of St Mawes; the remote, walk-in-only coves around St Anthony Head - Porthbeor, Great & Little Molunan and Towan; the working fishing village of Portscatho and the café-famous Porthcurnick; the National Trust beaches of Pendower and Carne, which join into one long sweep of sand across Gerrans Bay at low tide; the wild, little-visited coves of Paradoe and Kiberick either side of Nare Head; the picture-postcard fishing harbour of Portloe; the twin coves of Portholland; the dramatic, castle-backed sands of Porthluney Cove below Caerhays Castle; the quiet beaches of Hemmick and Vault near Dodman Point; and finally Gorran Haven, a historic harbour village at the peninsula's eastern edge.

Several of these beaches - Porthbeor, Great & Little Molunan, Paradoe Cove and Kiberick Cove among them - have no road access or car park at all, and are reached only on foot via the South West Coast Path. This is deliberate: the Roseland has largely escaped the busier development seen elsewhere in Cornwall, and its beaches range from the sociable (St Mawes, Gorran Haven, Porthluney) to the genuinely remote. Several beaches here have no accommodation listings of their own and honestly point to the nearest genuine hub - St Anthony in Roseland, Portscatho, Veryan, or the general Roseland Peninsula hub.
