Open-air theatre across Cornwall and Devon
Miracle Theatre is one of the longest-running touring theatre companies in the South West, taking live performance out of conventional theatre buildings and into some of Cornwall's and Devon's most striking outdoor settings - country house gardens, castle grounds, farms and open-air amphitheatres. Each summer the company mounts a single new production and tours it to around 34 venues, so audiences bring a picnic and a folding chair rather than book a seat in a fixed auditorium.
Founded in 1979 by Bill Scott, the company made its debut with "The Beginning of the World" at Perran Round, one of Cornwall's ancient open-air playing places (plen-an-gwarry). Nearly half a century on, 2026 marks Miracle Theatre's 47th year of touring - a remarkable run for a company that has always worked outdoors, at the mercy of the Cornish weather. The company has been a regularly funded National Portfolio Organisation of Arts Council England since 2005.
Miracle Theatre's repertoire runs from classic drama to newly devised comedy. Samuel Beckett's "Waiting for Godot" - not the most obvious choice for an open-air touring show - has twice been part of the company's history, first staged in 1985 and revived again in 2013, and remains one of its most fondly remembered productions among longtime audiences.
Current Tour: Peer Gynt - A Comedy of Terrors
Miracle Theatre's 2026 summer production is "Peer Gynt - A Comedy of Terrors," touring from 8 June to 29 August 2026 to around 34 venues across Cornwall and Devon. As with every Miracle Theatre tour, each venue sets its own ticket price and booking arrangements, so prices vary from stop to stop - typically from around £20 for adults and £10 for under-16s. Tickets are booked directly through each host venue rather than through Miracle Theatre itself.
Outside the summer touring season, Miracle Theatre also stages an indoor Christmas production at the Princess Pavilion in Falmouth, giving audiences a chance to catch the company's work when open-air performance isn't practical.
