Lappa Valley
Cornwall's Secret World of Play and Trains, near St Newlyn East
Lappa Valley, St Newlyn East, Newquay, Cornwall, TR8 5LX | 01872 510317
Three steam railways and a lot more besides
Set in 35 acres of Cornish countryside near St Newlyn East, Lappa Valley bills itself as "Cornwall's Secret World of Play and Trains" - and the name is well earned. The visit itself starts with a train ride: a narrow-gauge steam locomotive carries passengers from the car park along the old branch line into the main park, past the ruins of the historic East Wheal Rose mine engine house.
Once inside, there are two further miniature railways to ride, alongside a boating lake, adventure golf course, woodland walks and an indoor soft play area called The Engine Shed - useful for a wet day or when younger visitors need a break from the outdoor attractions. The whole site is deliberately low-key and unhurried compared with Cornwall's bigger theme parks, and it's particularly well suited to families with younger children.
Dogs are welcome for a small additional charge, and the site's mix of trains, water and open space makes it easy to fill the best part of a day.
