About Beachside House

Beachside House offered bed and breakfast in the heart of Downalong, the artists’ quarter of St Ives – the thin strip of land that separates the harbour from Porthmeor Beach and links the Island to the mainland. Porthmeor Beach, Tate St Ives, the harbour and the shops were all a short walk away.

St Ives & Downalong

St Ives is famous for its restaurants, galleries, beaches and scenery. Originally a fishing port landing mackerel, herring and pilchards, it later became home to artists such as Barbara Hepworth, Bernard Leach, Ben Nicholson, Alfred Wallis and Patrick Heron – visit Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum. Wander the winding streets of granite cottages and you are still as likely to meet a fisherman as an artist.

Downalong is the old fishermen’s and artists’ quarter of St Ives – the narrow strip of granite cottages and winding streets between the harbour and Porthmeor Beach, leading out to the Island.

The old town has narrow streets and very limited parking, especially in summer. The park-and-ride at Lelant Saltings, with the scenic branch-line train into St Ives, is often the easiest option.

Yes – the St Ives branch line runs from St Erth on the main London to Penzance line, along the edge of the bay through Lelant and Carbis Bay.
