Lower House, Callington · Georgian guest house and residential art school in the Tamar Valley, East Cornwall

Lower House – Georgian Guest House in Callington, Tamar Valley

A fine Georgian family home in the centre of the small town of Callington, in the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Lower House offers en-suite guest accommodation in four rooms – two spacious family rooms, a double that can also be a twin, and a single – each with original artworks on the walls. The house and its attached coach house are also used as a residential art school, so it is best to call to check availability.

Breakfast is made from local produce as far as possible and cooked to order, with cereals, fruit, yoghurt and homemade bread and jams, and in summer meals are often enjoyed in the pretty castellated, stone-walled garden.

A House with History – Built in 1722

Lower House was built in 1722 and owned by the Coryton family until 1856, when it was bought by the Dingle family. William Dingle was quite a character in the area and was still living at Lower House when his granddaughter Eva – mother of Michael Foot MP – married Isaac Foot in 1904. Photographs of the couple on their wedding day were taken in the garden.

Callington is a small market town in East Cornwall, in the Tamar Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, about 12 miles north-west of Plymouth and 10 miles south of Launceston. Kit Hill, with its views over Cornwall and Devon, rises just outside the town.

Lower House was built in 1722 and owned by the Coryton family until 1856, when it was bought by the Dingle family. William Dingle was still living there when his granddaughter Eva – later the mother of Michael Foot MP – married Isaac Foot in 1904, and photographs of their wedding day were taken in the garden.

Walks along the river and the old mining landscape (part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site), Kit Hill Country Park, the National Trust’s Cotehele and quay, St Mellion golf, and Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor are both close by.

The south coast at Whitsand Bay, Seaton and Kingsand and Cawsand is around 30–40 minutes’ drive, and Looe about 40 minutes.

Yes – it sits close to the Tamar, the border between the two counties, so Plymouth, Tavistock and Dartmoor are as easy to reach as Bodmin Moor, Looe and the Rame Peninsula.
