Penzance Beaches

Penzance grew up around the sweep of Mount's Bay, and this stretch of coast follows the shoreline from the picturesque fishing village of Mousehole, just to the west, through the old mining settlement of Wherrytown near Newlyn, right round to Long Rock on the causeway towards Marazion and St Michael's Mount. This guide covers all six: Mousehole's small sandy harbour beach beneath one of Cornwall's most photographed villages, Wherrytown's pebble shore with its submerged prehistoric forest, the town's own mile-long Promenade Beach, the rocky sea-swimming spot at Battery Rocks beside the Art Deco Jubilee Pool, the quiet sandy sweep of Eastern Green, and the family-friendly beach at Long Rock.

Mousehole (pronounced "Mowzel") sits just over two miles west of Penzance and is worth including here even though it lies technically beyond the town boundary - its small beach inside the working harbour is the natural western anchor for anyone exploring this coastline, though unlike the other five beaches dogs are not permitted on the sand at any time of year. Penzance Promenade Beach is the folder's flagship proper - a mix of shingle and sand beneath the town's Victorian and Edwardian seafront, with rock pools exposed at low tide and views across the bay to St Michael's Mount. Battery Rocks, at the harbour end, has been a year-round sea-swimming spot since at least the 1880s and sits beside the historic Jubilee Pool lido. Wherrytown and Eastern Green offer a quieter, more local alternative at either end of town, while Long Rock, roughly two miles out towards Marazion, is a genuinely safe, shelving family beach with its own low-cost car park.
