Manhattan is a beautifully presented, detached self-catering holiday chalet in Hayle, sleeping up to six guests in three double bedrooms. It sits in a quiet cul-de-sac at Riviere Towans, high on the dunes above St Ives Bay, just a five-minute walk from Hayle's three miles of golden sand.
Wake up to coastal and estuary views across the Hayle Estuary, where the tide and the birdlife change the scene all day. Watch fishing boats coming in and out of Hayle Harbour, see the little St Ives branch line train crossing the estuary, and enjoy the sunsets over the bay from the lounge picture window or the benches out front.
Manhattan is the owner's own second home rather than just a holiday let, so it's continually updated and comes with the extras you'd have at home. It has been welcoming guests through Cornwall Online since 2003 – a perfect base for beach holidays, surfing, coastal walks and exploring St Ives and the rest of West Cornwall.
The lounge has a large picture window with countryside views and panoramic sea views along the coast, three settees seating seven, a coffee table, a smart TV with Netflix, and a music centre with radio, CD player and MP3 socket. Secure WiFi is available throughout.
Next door, the dining room enjoys the same fabulous views, with a table and chairs and a corner unit stocked with board games and books for rainy days. Because Manhattan is the owner's second home, it has extras such as a hairdryer, a make-up mirror and a kitchen drawer with all the things you'd have at home. It is equipped to a high standard throughout, with all the necessary safety checks.

Manhattan is a privately owned, detached chalet in a quiet, safe cul-de-sac. Out front there's a picnic table and two benches with a centre table top, all looking out over the sea views, plus fold-up chairs – the perfect spot for breakfast in the sun or a drink as it sets over St Ives Bay.
Riviere Towans is a small, peaceful community of holiday chalets in the dunes – "towans" is the Cornish word for sand dunes – at the western end of Hayle's great sweep of beach. From here three miles of golden sand stretch east past Hayle Towans, Mexico Towans and Upton Towans to Gwithian and Godrevy.
At low tide the beach is vast, with plenty of room for sunbathing, beach games and long walks, and the Atlantic swell makes it a popular place to learn to surf or bodyboard. Lifeguards patrol parts of the beach in the main season, and dogs are welcome on some sections of the beach year-round. The dunes behind are rich in wildflowers and wildlife, with parts of the dune system protected for their rare plants and insects.
From Manhattan it's a five-minute walk to the beach, with the Bucket of Blood pub in Phillack, the Bluff Inn and a convenience shop all close by. A ten-minute walk along the harbour brings you to the main shops in Hayle, and the A30 – the road to all of West Cornwall's attractions – is about four minutes' drive away.
Riviere Towans sits right at the mouth of the Hayle Estuary, where the river meets St Ives Bay. Looking west, the view takes in the estuary channel, Porthkidney Sands, Lelant and Carbis Bay, with St Ives on the far side of the bay; looking east, the beach runs all the way to Godrevy Lighthouse. Between the fishing boats heading in and out of Hayle Harbour, the surfers on the waves and the evening sunsets over the bay, there's always something to watch.
The chalets are reached by quiet lanes with no through traffic, and sandy paths lead through the dunes straight down to the beach, so it's an easy place for a relaxed, traditional seaside holiday – beach in the morning, a walk along the shore in the afternoon and a meal out in the evening. Next door, the old village of Phillack has its parish church and pub, and the walk around the harbour into Hayle passes the town's historic quays, now home to cafés, shops and places to eat.

Godrevy Lighthouse & the coast path
Walk the full length of the beach, or take the South West Coast Path, to Godrevy, where the lighthouse on its island inspired Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse. The National Trust clifftops beyond are a good place to look for grey seals in the coves below. In the other direction the path follows the estuary towards Lelant and on to St Ives.
Hayle, the harbour & the estuary
Hayle grew up as a busy port and engineering town in Cornwall's mining heyday – part of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape World Heritage Site. Today its harbour and the long Copperhouse Pool are lined with shops, cafés and places to eat. The RSPB Hayle Estuary nature reserve is one of the best places in Cornwall for birdwatching, with waders and wildfowl feeding on the mudflats, especially in autumn and winter. Families will love Paradise Park in Hayle, home to rare birds and red pandas.
St Ives – art, harbour and beaches
St Ives is one of Cornwall's best-loved towns, with cobbled streets, galleries, independent shops and waterfront restaurants. Visit Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden, or take a boat trip from the harbour. Leave the car behind and ride the St Ives branch line – one of the most scenic railway journeys in Britain, running right along the edge of the bay.
