Looe
Looe is a charming coastal town in southeast Cornwall, England, that is known for its picturesque harbour, sandy beaches, and bustling atmosphere. As a family holiday destination, Looe offers a delightful blend of natural beauty, rich history, and a plethora of activities to keep visitors of all ages entertained. The town is divided into East and West Looe by the River Looe, which meanders through the center and flows into the English Channel.
Looe is home to two main beaches, Hannafore Beach and Looe Beach, both of which are ideal for families. The sandy shores are perfect for building sandcastles, sunbathing, and swimming in the safe, shallow waters. For those looking for more adventure, there are also rock pools to explore at low tide, revealing a diverse marine life. The town's mild climate makes it a great spot for water sports, such as kayaking and paddleboarding, and there are several companies that offer lessons and equipment rentals.
One of the highlights for families is the Looe Valley Line, a scenic train journey that runs through the picturesque countryside between Looe and Liskeard. The journey is a delightful way to see the sights and is particularly enjoyable for children who love trains.
For those who prefer to stay closer to the town, there are quaint shops and eateries to explore, as well as a bustling fish market. Boat trips from the harbour provide opportunities to see dolphins and seals, while fishing excursions allow families to try their hand at catching their own dinner.
Polperro
Nearby Polperro is a quintessential Cornish fishing village that has retained much of its original charm. Its narrow, winding streets are lined with colorful cottages, and the harbour is a tranquil spot to watch the local fishermen at work. The village is traffic-free, making it a safe and relaxing place for families to wander. Polperro Beach is a sheltered cove, perfect for families with young children, and there are several scenic walks along the coastal path to enjoy. The village's main street boasts a variety of shops, galleries, and eateries, offering souvenirs, ice cream, and fresh seafood.
Polperro is also a great base for exploring the coastline, with easy access to the South West Coast Path, which provides stunning views of the sea and the surrounding countryside. Families can take leisurely strolls or more challenging hikes depending on their preferences and fitness levels.
Lansallos Bay
Lansallos Bay is a secluded, sandy cove located a short drive from Looe. It is less well-known than some of the more popular beaches in the area, which means it is often quieter and more peaceful. The bay is surrounded by lush greenery and towering cliffs, providing a picturesque backdrop for a family day out. The beach is excellent for swimming and building sandcastles, while the surrounding countryside is perfect for picnics and walks. There are also rock pools to explore and the chance to see seals and dolphins if you're lucky.
Both Looe and Polperro offer a range of accommodations suitable for families, from cozy cottages to larger holiday homes and hotels. With so much to see and do, the area provides an ideal setting for a memorable family holiday, combining the charm of traditional English seaside towns with the natural beauty of the Cornish coastline.
