Sir John's father, also called Sir John, making his fortune in the service of his country; knighted after the battle of the Spurs, was Esquire of the Body to Henry VIII before going on to serve under King Edward VI and Queen Mary. The Arundell family supported the Royalist cause during the English Civil War and some a degree of financial hardships as a consequence. At the Restoration of the Monarchy their fortunes revived. The Arundells lived owned Trerice for over 400 years; the property passing to the Acland family of Killerton in Devon in 1802.
