PENRYN AND THE LOCAL AREA
PENRYN is one of Cornwall's most ancient and attractive
towns and has a wealth of charm, character and history.
Situated at the head of the Penryn River it occupies
a sheltered position and was a port of some significance with a history
dating back well over a thousand years.
Some of its buildings date back to Tudor, Jacobean and
Georgian times.
Folk-lore and tradition go hand-in-hand with stories
such as the Bohelland Tragedy - a sad tale of a family wiped
out through greed; and the Tale of the Spaniard at Penryn and
the story of Thomas Pellow, who had numerous adventures in the
east and was enslaved by a Sultan.
Then there was the fate of Lady Jane Killigrew
who was given refuge from her pursuers in Penryn. Two hundred years
later one of her descendants was killed in a drunken brawl whilst defending
her name!
With well-tended parks and gardens and play areas, Penryn
is an ideal place to tarry a while and explore its delights, mysteries
and beauty.
Penryn people take a pride in their town and there is
still a strong community spirit and everyone is friendly and wanting
to make your stay happy and memorable.
