Indoor pools in every main town, independent community centres, and outdoor lidos and tidal sea pools along the coast.
Whatever the Cornish weather is doing, there's a pool not far away. Cornwall Council's leisure partnership covers 14 public leisure centres with indoor swimming pools, spread across the main towns from Bude in the north to Penzance in the west and Saltash on the Devon border. They're run by a mix of operators: nine are part of the Better/GLL network, working in partnership with Cornwall Council, while several others — Camelford, Carn Brea, Launceston, Penzance and Wadebridge — are independent charitable trusts or community-owned centres, some of which were rescued and reopened by local volunteers after facing closure when their original funding was withdrawn.
Alongside the indoor centres, Cornwall has some of the most distinctive outdoor swimming spots in the country. The Jubilee Pool in Penzance is a Grade II listed Art Deco seawater lido — the largest of its kind in the UK — with a geothermally heated pool added in 2020 that keeps it a year-round destination rather than a summer-only attraction. Bude Sea Pool takes a more elemental approach: a semi-natural tidal pool refilled twice daily by the Atlantic, free to use and kept going entirely by volunteers. For a gentler, heated alternative, Hayle Outdoor Swimming Pool offers a traditional summer lido experience on the edge of the Hayle Estuary Nature Reserve.
Most indoor centres offer the full range you'd expect — public swim sessions, lane swimming, swimming lessons for children and adults, aqua fitness classes, and family-friendly extras like soft play, flumes or wave pools at the larger sites such as Newquay Leisure World. Facilities, pool sizes and opening hours vary considerably between centres, so this guide groups them by how they're run and links through to each operator's own site for current timetables, pricing and booking.
It's also worth knowing what's not currently available: Falmouth no longer has a public swimming pool, following the closure of the former Ships & Castles Leisure Centre — more detail on that, and on the community campaign to bring a pool back to the town, is below. And if you're based in east Cornwall, we've also included Plymouth's pools, just across the Tamar — strictly Devon, but often the nearest option for Saltash and Torpoint.

The former Ships & Castles Leisure Centre on Pendennis Headland has closed and no longer has a swimming pool. The site now operates as Pendennis Community Centre, offering dry activities such as yoga, zumba and circuits. The community group running it has a long-term ambition to reinstate a 6-lane 25m pool and teaching pool, but this depends on securing significant funding and there is currently no swimming facility in Falmouth itself. For visitors staying in east Cornwall — Saltash, Torpoint and the Rame Peninsula — Plymouth is often the nearest city, just across the Tamar Bridge or a short hop on the Torpoint Ferry. It's in Devon rather than Cornwall, but worth knowing about, not least for its two outdoor pools with some of the best sea views in the South West.

A 10-lane 50m Olympic-standard swimming pool plus a diving pool and toddler pool, run by Plymouth Active Leisure (formerly Everyone Active) in partnership with Plymouth City Council. Also has a 112-station gym, 12-court sports hall, indoor bowls and a climbing wall.
Hoe Road, Plymouth, PL1 3DE
A Grade II listed 1935 Art Deco saltwater lido set right on Plymouth Hoe, overlooking Plymouth Sound — regularly ranked among Europe's best outdoor pools. Seasonal, open May to September, with a cafe and sun terrace open year-round. Concessionary rates for Plymouth residents, children, over-66s and forces/NHS staff.
