PORT ISAAC NORTH CORNWALL
Port Isaac is a historic fishing village which still retains
it traditional character, and remains relatively unspoilt.
It is a cluster of pretty white washed cottages, huddled
around a picturesque harbour which is the heart of a thriving fishing
community. It's steep hills, narrow streets and harbour are flanked by
majestic cliffs towering above the Atlantic. You may already know it -
it is where the popular ITV program 'Doc
Martin' was filmed (as was the film 'Saving
Grace').
Port Isaac has numerous restaurants specialising in local
seafood, shops, a pub and a wide selection of local arts and crafts. There
is a pottery and several galleries which show the work of local artists.
You can buy fish from the fish cellars, and locally landed shellfish (in
season).
The parish hosts the internationally known St Endellion
Music Festival twice every year. Bodmin Moor with its stunning scenery,
Tintagel with its Arthurian remains, the Eden Project as well as other
delightful Cornish gardens are all accessible, as is the Tate St. Ives.
There are three pubs and many restaurants within walking distance but
you may also want to dine at one of TV chef Rick Stein's restaurants in
Padstow for a special treat.
The coastal footpath runs through Port Isaac, and
there are plenty of well signed inland walks too. Depending on the time
of year you come, you will be able to see a wide range of wildflowers,
birds and butterflies. Within a few miles of Port Isaac, for the more
energetic, there are opportunities for sailing, surfing, horse riding,
cycling on the Camel Trail, several golf courses, and beautiful
wide sandy beaches for just relaxing.
There is a local diving school and fishing trips can be
taken from the harbour, you can catch your own mackerel and even spot
a basking shark or two.
Directions
On approaching the village, proceed down Back Hill
( a one way system). At the bottom Turn Right - by the Old School
Hotel. A Short way up the hill, on the Left, is an entrance to
a steep track, with "no through" Road Sign. Take
this turning, then turn left into the courtyard. 57A is the third dwelling
on the left. The parking space is alongside the Grey Garage door. All
parking is at your own risk.
