Two beam engines originally used for pumping water (from a depth of 550m), and for winding men and ore. Originally powered by high-pressure steam patented by local Engineer Richard Trevithick in 1802 but now powered by electricity. The mines can be found at Pool between Camborne and Redruth. At the site there is Michell's Whim, which is situated adjacent to the main road, a winding engine now operated by electric motor. There is a car park and small interpretation centre. On the opposite side of the main road; behind Safeway's car park, is Taylor's Shaft. The site has recently undergone a major refurbishment in order to turn it into the Cornwall Industrial Discovery Centre. The new displays include an Audio Visual display, located in the boiler house and a walk through the exposed brick boiler flue and chimney. Nearby is the Geological Museum of the Camborne School of Mines. Trevithick's Cottage is nearby at Penponds and is open every Wednesday 1400 to 1700 free of charge although donations are always welcome. Opening times:
