Paddleboarding in Cornwall

From flat-water estuary tours on the Camel and Fowey to beginner-friendly lessons at Harlyn Bay, Crantock and St Ives, and calm inland lakes on Bodmin Moor, stand up paddleboarding is one of the easiest ways to get out on Cornwall's water - plus a Plymouth option on the Sound.

Back to Activities

Stand up paddleboarding (SUP) has become one of Cornwall's most popular watersports, and the county's mix of sheltered beaches, tidal estuaries and inland lakes makes it an easy sport to pick up regardless of experience. On the north coast, Harlyn Surf School near Padstow was among the first UK schools to teach SUP, back in 2006, and now offers lessons, guided tours and even SUP yoga on the Camel Estuary. Era Adventures, based in Polzeath, runs SUP tours out to Port Gaverne and Port Quin alongside coasteering and sea kayaking, while Big Green Adventures at Crantock is the only operator able to launch straight from the beach onto the beautiful Gannel Estuary.

Further west, St Ives Surf School runs a dedicated watersports centre at Porthminster Beach for paddleboarding, kayaking and coasteering, and on the Camel Estuary at Rock, Camel Ski School hires inflatable SUPs - including "Monster SUPs" that take up to six people - for self-guided paddling towards Daymer Bay or upstream to Wadebridge.

On the south coast, Breakers Surf School, based at St Agnes, also runs sessions at Falmouth, Marazion and the Roseland, and Encounter Cornwall at Golant offers SUP lessons on the calm upper reaches of the Fowey River, a Marine Conservation Zone. Away from the coast, Siblyback Lake and Stithians Lake both hire paddleboards on sheltered, non-tidal water - ideal for nervous beginners. If you want to buy your own board, Cornwall Canoes near Indian Queens stocks paddleboards alongside its kayak and canoe range.

Good to know before you book

  • No experience needed for lessons: every school listed here caters for complete beginners, with wetsuits and boards provided.
  • Estuaries and lakes are best for first-timers: flat, sheltered water on the Camel, the Fowey, the Gannel or a lake is far easier to learn on than open surf.
  • Wind is the main safety factor: most operators will reschedule or close hire if conditions are too windy - flexibility helps if you're staying for a few days.
  • Ages vary by provider: most group lessons welcome ages 8 and up, with private lessons available for younger children.
  • Book ahead in summer: lessons, tours and hire slots get busy in peak season - book in advance where possible.
