There are many beaches nearby, including Pentewan, Portmellon, Gorran Haven and Crinnis. Just along the coast you will find the historic fishing village of Mevagissey, complete with impossibly narrow streets that radiate away from a picturesque harbour. When weather permits there is a ferry service across the bay to Fowey. To the east you will find the stunning Gribben Peninsula - fantastic beaches, scenic clifftop walks and 'Manderlay' - once the home of Daphne du Maurier, made famous by her novel 'Rebecca'. Further round the peninsula is Fowey, a small town and port clinging to the steep sides of the river valley. Narrow streets, historic buildings, restaurants, cafe's, castles and a charming waterfront all add to the atmosphere of this delightful location. The lies at the end of the Saint's Way, the mediaeval pilgrim's route from Ireland to France and is near to the fabled Castle Dore, linked in legend to the stories of Tristan and Iseult and of course, King Arthur. The property is a 15 minute drive from both the Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan. We are also near to some of Cornwall's best cycle trails. The closest runs from St Austell down the valley to Pentewan. A short drive takes you Cardinham Woods, near Bodmin, with cycle hire facilities and several graded routes through the forest trails. Slightly further away is the Camel Trail, created from a former steam railway line, which offers 16 miles of all-weather off road cycling. The Trail (between Wadebridge and Padstow) is also ideal for wheelchair users and pushchairs. Whether you are an avid bird watcher, or just interested in wildlife, the Camel Trail offers a wealth and diversity of bird life. Whilst taking in breathtaking views of the Camel Estuary and Padstow, you can see flocks of Curlew and Oystercatchers throughout the year and Golden Plover and Lapwing in the winter months. The centre section of the trail homes Dipper, Kingfisher and Grey Wagtail to name just a few. |
