The Boathouse must be one of the finest
private houses available for self-catering holiday letting in Cornwall.
It commands a truly stunning location right on the beach in a small
quiet cove in Gillan with beautiful uninterrupted views over the
Cove and beyond out to sea. The beach is a mixture of sand and shingle
and is perfect for launching dinghies/kayaks at all states of the
tide. It also provides safe swimming and rock pooling.
It is the owners' second home and as
such it is well equipped and luxuriously appointed. The house is
being enlarged and refurbished during Spring 2010.
It was the
cover feature in
"25 Beautiful Homes" in August 2004.
ACCOMMODATION
The layout of The Boathouse makes the most of its beautiful
location. On the first floor is a large open plan sitting room with
double doors looking out over the creek and beyond out to sea. The
double doors lead out onto a large decking area with a table and
chairs for outside dining. At high tide the water will be but a
few feet away!
Leading off the sitting room is the
30 foot kitchen/dining room which also faces the sea and has lovely
views. Also on the first floor is the study and two master bedrooms
with their respective ensuite bathrooms. This means that the house
is well suited to couples as the downstairs bedrooms may be closed
off and the first floor acts as a spacious two bedroom apartment.
Downstairs there is a twin bedroom with
en-suite shower room, a larger bedroom with twin beds and a set
of bunk beds and another twin bedroom. This twin bedroom is on the
garden side of the house whilst the other two bedrooms face the
sea and you can fall asleep to the sound of gentle waves lapping
on the shore. The large shower room with its metre square shower
is for the 4 bed room and the garden twin bed room to share.
Overlooking the lovely garden is a 30
foot games/TV room with large flatscreen TV, DVD and lots of books
and toys. There are two entrances to the house; the wetroom with
shower for wet sandy people coming off the beach where they can
take off and hang up their wetsuits in the warmth! Also the front
door leading to a carpeted hallway and the rest of the accommodation
for dry people!. There is a laundry room on the ground floor with
washing machine and separate dryer and next door the laundry room
is a loo and basin..
On the ground floor there is also a
small bunk bedroom. The wetroom, loo and basin is just opposite
this bedroom.
SAILING
Gillan Creek is situated right next to the Helford River which is
famous for its unspoilt and protected sailing waters. It is possible
to bring your own sailing dinghies to the Boathouse and to launch
and store them on the beach or in the garden. Alternatively you
may hire a wide range of boats from Sailaway at St Anthony which
is situated minutes away. Moorings for larger boats are also available
in the Cove right outside the house from Sailaway. Please note that
the Boathouse beach always has water and is not muddy! It does not
dry out as we are not far enough up the creek for this to happen.
WALKING
The Cornish Coastal path passes right by the Boathouse and there
are stunning Cliffside and riverside walks directly from the house.
At low tide one may cross Gillan Creek and walk to Helford. A short
drive from the house takes you to Daphne du Maurier's famous "Frenchman's
Creek" which is another lovely walk as is the walk to Tremayne Quay
which is in the same vicinity. There are also woodland walks on
the nearby 1000 acre Trelowarren Estate.
GARDENS
The Lizard is well known for its many and beautiful gardens and
within easy reach of the Boathouse are the following gardens; Trebah,
Glendurgan, Trelissick, The Lost Gardens of Heligan and The Eden
Project (just over an hour by car).
SIGHTSEEING
There are many and varied things to see and do around the
Boathouse from art in the Tate at St Ives to walking with camels
at Goonhilly! There is Land's End to see as well as the new Maritime
Museum in Falmouth, the Goonhilly Satellite tracking station, going
down an old tin mine or a trip to the Duchy Oyster Farm in Porth
Navas Creek, visiting the Seal sanctuary or having a day out at
Flambards! There are also fabulous surfing beaches in St Ives Bay
(40 mins drive). There are plenty of lovely pubs and restaurants
too!
