Porthleven

Porthleven is just a 5 minute drive from the ancient market town of Helston and 35 minutes from the lovely cathedral city of Truro, with its cobbled streets and many interesting shops and museums.

A peaceful little fishing port with a distinctive 19th century quay, its long harbour wall, protects Porthleven from the south westerly gales of winter.

The narrow streets by the harbour are adorned by fishermen's cottages, with elegant Victorian and Edwardian villas climbing into the surrounding, steep hillsides.

Porthleven successfully combines the activities of a working fishing port with those of a popular holiday resort, a mix which ensures that the village is alive with gift shops, galleries, a diverse range of restaurants, comfortable pubs and cafes - trading alongside fishmongers, boatbuilders and chandlers.

There is a sheltered beach, popular with families, and access to breathtaking coastal walks to the east and west of the village.

To the west of the harbour you will discover the Pargodonnel Rocks, where at low tide you will see a 50 ton 'pebble' known as the Giant's Rock, formed from stone found nowhere else in Britain.

To the East you will discover Loe Bar and its impressive lake separated from the sea by a narrow shingle bar which according to Tennyson, is the resting place of King Arthur's Sword - Excalibur and the home of the Lady of the Lake.

Porthleven is two miles from the historic market town of Helston, famous for Flora Day, the mystical celebration to welcome spring in the ancient ways of garlanding the town with laurel and bluebells and a daytime of dancing through the winding streets. Helston has all the amenities of banks and shops, a folk museum, library, sports centre, pubs and restaurants.
