Holidays on the Camel Estuary

Explore the Superb Beaches in one of the UK's Marine Conservation Zones

Enjoy a family holiday in the stunning part of North Cornwall

Trebetherick and Daymer Bay is a fantastic location with many activities available nearby to suit all tastes. Daymer bay has a good sized family friendly beach, just across the estuary from Padstow. Being, within the mouth of the Camel Estuary, Daymer Bay is sheltered with a gently sloping beach that is excellent for swimming The sands at daymer bay are bordered by dunes and sandhills - with a car park, small cafe, shop and toilet facilities at its northern edge. It is comparatively off the beaten track compared to its neighbours, Rock and Polzeath which gives it a slightly more secluded feel.

The Camel Estuary is one of the UK's Marine Conservation Zones. There are 41 of these designated areas across the UK. The Camel Estuary, on the North Cornwall coast is the UK's largest and most sheltered marine inlets. The estuary covers around 2 km², offering a wide range of habitats, including mud and coastal saltmarshes. The coarse intertidal sediment has an important function in preventing coastal erosion and beach protection, while the intertidal mud provides habitats for a large range of invertebrates including ragworms and mud shrimp -creating saltmarshes that are important foraging sites for wading birds and wildfowl.

Marsh Samphire (Salicornia europaea) can be found growing in the salt marshes of the estuary. Samphire grows wild on salty mudflats and marshy shallows through the warmest months. Samphire is a colonising species of muddy coasts and estuaries. Once established, its mat of roots help to bind the soft mud and silt - creating a stable medium for other salt-loving plants to grow.

As well as being an important pioneer species, Samphire is often collected as a food plant. The soft succulent stems of the plant are a popular ingredient in salads and garnishes or as a tasty side dish - servered either raw or lightly steamed & served with butter.

Rock and Daymer Bay

At south the end of the beach is Brae Hill - a distictive hill on the edge of the estuary. Brae Hill offers excellent views of the Estuary and the local countryside, making a climb of the grassy mound worth the effort. Just behind Brae Hill is the Rock Golf Course, with a footpath that leads from daymer bay and Trebetherick to the small, but popular coastal village of Rock. The footpath passess the famous St Enodoc Church or "Sinking Neddy" -the former Poet Laureate, John Betjeman is buried there.

Activities: Surfing at Polzeath beach, Cycling on the Camel Trail, Golf at Roserrow and St Enodoc (short course and links), Sailing at Rock, Windsurfing and Water skiing at Daymer Bay. Ideally located for exploring the local area, Rock, Padstow, the Camel Trail, Port Isaac, Tintagel, Boscastle. Superb walking country, SW coastal path 5-10 mins.
