PORTREATH
"Porth" in Cornish means "Cove" "Treath"
means "Beach"
THE BEACH IN THE COVE
Portreath and the surrounding area offer one of the most
spectacular beauty spots in the county. It nestles in a valley between
high cliffs, which open out to form a bay with a lovely, sandy, family
beach and picturesque harbour. Although Portreath is just a village, all
holiday needs are catered for - with a range of shops, pubs, restaurant
and post office. Portreath is steeped in history and the 18th Century
harbour served the local copper and tin mines, via the 8 mile Portreath
Tramway, which has been restored and can be walked or cycled today. Portreath
is on the North Coast Footpath, with towering cliffs and secluded coves,
with names such as Hells Mouth, Deadman's Cove, Smuggler's Cove, Ralph's
Cupboard - a reminder of days of smuggling and wrecking. Portreath is
an ideal base from which to enjoy the following: Swimming, Surfing, Wind
Surfing, Fishing, Golf, Horse Riding, Pony Trekking, Cycling, Walking.
Near by is the Carn Brea Leisure Centre with Swimming Pools, Tennis Courts
etc., Tehidy Country Park & Woodlands and National Trust Coastal Footpaths.
