Mullion is the largest village on the Lizard Peninsula, officially classed as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The 15th century church of St Mellanus set in the centre of the village is famous for its richly carved oak bench ends depicting biblical scenes, including that of Jonah and the whale and is well worth visiting.
Mullion cove is a small attractive working harbour that is protected by two sturdy stone sea walls to protect it from the gales that rage across mounts bay in the winter. The harbour was paid for by Lord Robarytes of Lanhydrock as recompense to the local fishermen after several disastrous pilchard fishing seasons and was completed in 1895. It is owned by the National Trust.
Nearby Poldhu Cove is an ideal easy to reach family beach and is popular with surfers. The cliffs above are world famous as this is where in December 1901, Guglielmo Marconi successfully conducted his famous experiments in transatlantic radio communications and the Marconi monument can be seen along the picturesque coastal path to Poldhu Cove. On the 12 December a new Marconi wireless museum was opened and it is situated on the site of the old wireless station.
