2008 ST MERRYN HOLIDAY VILLAGE SITUATION : St Merryn Holiday Village is situated approximately 1 mile from the village of St Merryn. The village is close to 7 beaches, the nearest being Porthcothan, which is approximately one and a half miles away. Situated on the North Coast of Cornwall, the Village is ideal for holiday makers being close to the charming fishing village of Padstow, famous for its ancient tradition of the 'Hobby Horse'. Also situated a little further away, is the seaside town of Newquay, a town with all domestic and holiday amenities, clubs, restaurants, discotheques etc. The North Coast is also popular for it's beaches, where all water sports can be pursued. THE VILLAGE : The Holiday Village is not now an organised Holiday Camp. However, it has a newly built Amenities Complex complete with a Mini Market, a Hair and Beauty Salon, a Bar and a Restaurant. The adjacent Maribou Site has many on site amenities and activities. In season, there is a shop, bar, and restaurant, laundrette, hairdresser, pool hall, and take away fish and chip shop. Also a video games room, a childrens adventure playground with trampolenes and swing boats, and a crazy golf course. Within the playground is a picnic area with tables and benches for parents to sit and watch. Amenities in the area include golf, horse riding, fishing, sailing, surfing, wind surfing, parachuting and gliding Finally, if the holiday maker just requires a 'quiet holiday' then, because the site is quite extensive, the Bungalows themselves are very quiet, indeed many of them are now permanently residential.
ST MERRYN The parish of St Merryn is unique, possessing five unspoiled beaches on it's seaward boundary. Winding lanes criss cross the hinterland of green fields, farms and hamlets. A mediaeval church, Bronze Age settlements, interesting inns, holiday complexes, well equipped caravan parks and a country club, all combine, to give colour and vitality to this expanding community whose roots are old and deep. The footpath which links Harlyn, Mother Ivey's, Booby's, Constantine, Treyarnon and Porthcothan Bays overlooks one of the finest stretches of coastal scenery on the whole of the Cornwall Coastal Footpath, together with an abundance of wild flowers in spring and summer. The hub of St Merryn is SHOP Village which can boast of as many amenities as the average Cornish town; three self service grocery shops - two with off licenses, a newsagents with general goods, drapery and toiletries, a Post Office with full facilities and attached Gift Shop; a filling station and garage with shop selling DIY goods, ironmongery, fishing tackle and beach ware; a butcher, a fish and chip shop with cafe; a small restaurant specialising in a variety of take away meals; a ladies hairdresser, a laundrette, fishmongers, a leathercraft workshop, a cafe and gift shop, a gardening service and veterinary service. The Farmers Arms Inn with dining room, full catering facilities and childrens room and a large car park. Within walking distance is a doctors surgery - a branch of the Padstow/St Columb consortium; the Methodist Chapel and County Primary School. A bank is the only facility lacking, but Padstow, with three banks, is only two and a half miles. The most unusual front garden in the country must surely be the one near Tresallyn Cross, some half a mile from Churchtown. Eight giant monoliths stand in a circle like a minature Stonehenge in company with a copy of the West Penwith Men an Tol Stone, and standing nearby is Logan or Rocking Stone; two stones brought from the Falkland Islands, a Celtic Cross, an enormous Quoit comprising three tones surmounted by a huge capping stone. A 'holy' well and a twelve feet deep underground chamber completes this strange ensemble. The interior walls of the garage are covered with plaques bearing the names of celebrities and lesser known persons and more plaques overflow onto the front wall of the bungalow. The eccentric owner dubs himself Head Druid of the so-called Temple. At nearby Tresallyn Farm, riding stables cater for trekking through quiet lanes, or for cantering through spacious fields on good, well mannered horses. Also at Tresallyn Cross is Tregavoce Caravan and Camping Park. Inland and around the area of the old World War Two Naval Air Station is the North Cornwall Chalet Park, (St Merryn Holiday Village), a go-cart track for children and the Cornwall Parachute Centre which provides all the skills, chills and thrills for those who wish to float gently down and view the parish from the air. Harlyn, the first of St Merryn's six bays is a fine half mile long curving stretch of sand from the road bridge to the old Fish Cellars (now a private residence). Backed by dunes, low cliffs and fields, Harlyn is and ideal playgroung for Families. Swimming and surfing are safe here. A large car park overlooks the beach and public toilets are situated some 200 yards away at the end of the second car park. Mother Ivey's Bay is small and secluded, with a steeply shelving beach. A toll road leads up to Trevose Head with the white tower of the 87 feet high light house dominating the promontory and providing a stupendous view northwards to Hartland Point and westward to St Ives and Cape Cornwall. The green acres of Trevose Gold and Country Club stretch back from Booby's Bay and near the fourth green is a small building named 'Tom Parson' Hut' reputed to be the dwelling of a once notorious wrecker. Constantine Bay is fringed by sand dunes and its long crescent provides ample space for everyone, and delightful spots for picnics. Swimming and all year round surfing, are popular, but can be dangerous, and a life guard is in attendance during the summer months. Constantine Bay stores satisfies most needs plus a well stocked off-license, and nearby is Christines ladies hairdressing salon and a market garden. Treyarnon Bay is reached by winding lanes off the main St Merryn/Newquay road; by the lane from Constantine or by walking across the commons from Constantine Bay. This narrow sandy beach has been a favourite with surfers for many years. The north side is rocky, and contains a large natural swimming pool which is washed clean by high tides. A life guard is in attendance during the holiday season, as swimming from the beach is dangerous at low tide near rocks on the left hand side. What else has the village of St Merryn to offer?. A certain magic in the sea, the air, the friendly land and it's occupants. A magic which enfolds all who come here on holiday and which generates a desire to return again and again; and often later to settle down. THE EDEN PROJECT Cornwall's largest attraction must now be the new EDEN PROJECT. About 20 minutes drive from the Bungalow, and some 35 Acres in Area, this attraction is constantly being extended and improved, and has been more popular than the Originators ever envisaged, with various Shows including Concerts being Staged. Details will be attached to the Notice Board of the Bungalow.
