Mead Barns is a group of Victorian stone-built barns, set in about two acres of gardens, which have been converted into spacious and comfortable holiday homes full of character. They are nestled in a small hollow in the hamlet of Mead, part of Welcombe and just over half a mile from the sea on the Devon/Cornwall border about halfway between Clovelly and Bude. The barns have entrances at different levels ensuring a variety of garden, countryside and even the occasional sea view. Mead Barns are very close to the coastal path with its access to high cliffs and secluded coves. The closest of these is Welcombe Mouth with its beautiful valley, stream and waterfall leading to the sea and beach which has dramatic rock formations, rock pools and sand so that you can explore, surf or build sandcastles. There are many other coastal and country walks, both long and short through lanes, fields and wooded valleys and we provide circular walk intineries based on Mead. The area is a paradise for walkers, dog owners and those wanting to relax in an area of outstanding natural beauty which is one of the most unspoilt and tranquil in the country. Within a few minutes driving distance there is a large choice of sandy beaches: at Sandymouth, Bude and Westward Ho! Mead is just seventy five to ninety minutes from junction 27 of the M5 and five minutes off the A39 which means that, while enjoying peace and tranquillity, the accommodation is ideally placed for exploring the whole of the North Devon and Cornwall coast and for excursions inland to the moors and picturesque villages and historically interesting towns. There is so much to do many visitors find a week is not nearly enough! We are always available with suggestions for an interesting day out, whatever the weather. Within a short drive of Mead Barns are attractions for all the family, many of them amongst the top attractions of the area. They include The Milky Way, The Big Sheep, Dartington Crystal, Clovelly, Rosemoor Gardens and the Atlantic shopping village. We are just 20 minutes drive from North Cornwall's premier resort, Bude. Smaller attractions nearby include Killarney Springs, Brocklands and The Gnome Reserve. Leisure activities readily available include swimming, golf, horse-riding and of course, walking and surfing. Nearby Tamar lakes are famous for dinghy sailing, fishing and bird watching and you can also enjoy sailboarding and kayaking. On our doorstep is the Heritage Coast and Marsland Mouth with its beautifully situated thirteenth century watermill and land which is partly owned by the National Trust. The valley itself it a site of special scientific interest where rare moths, foxes, badgers, deer and especially buzzards can be found. Mead Barns makes an excellent touring location, situated within easy driving distance of the romantic Doone country of Exmoor and King Arthur's castle at Tintagel. We are close to the beautiful North Cornwall locations immortalised by John Betjeman, and the seafaring villages associated with Charles Kingsley. You can walk, cycle or even take a steam train ride along the Tarka Trail of Henry Williamson and see otters at closes quarters at the Tamar Otters' Trust. The Eden Project is easily accessible for a day trip.
All have well-equipped kitchens with cooker, microwave oven, fridge-freezer and pine dining furniture. The larger ones have washing machine and dishwasher. The living rooms are well furnished with comfortable settees and Devonshire pine, colour televisions, VCRs and hifis. The bedrooms are pine furnished with double beds (some four posters or with canopies) or are twin bedded. The barn cottages are well-heated throughout and all power and heating is included. The bathrooms have both baths and power showers and all bedding, kitchen linen and personal towels are included. The peak season changeover day is Friday. Outside peak season we offer flexible arrival and departure days and breaks.
Mead Barns are open all year and offer weeks and longer stays. Short breaks, including Romantic Retreats and weekends are available - except in July and August, with limited late availability in June and September. You may book over the Telephone or online (ssi secure site).
