Incredibly the small town of Lostwithiel, home to about 3,000 people, was once the capital of Cornwall and the second biggest port in the south of England. The town is steeped in history, boasting a 12th century church and one of the oldest Duchy Palaces in Cornwall. Originally the town was famous for its Tin mining, exporting all over the world and is now renowned for its welcoming and friendly hospitality. Lostwithiel is a great place to stay. The town has several good pubs and some excellent restaurants, all within a short walk from The Old Coachworks and in the interests of research, most of which we have tried and can highly recommend! If you do want to explore the delights of Cornwall, Lostwithiel is a good base with easy access to sites like the hugely successful Eden Project, which is only 4 miles away. The picturesque town of Fowey is just five miles away, sitting on the lovely Fowey Estuary; it has some stunning walks and breathtaking views and is fast becoming 'The' place in Cornwall to be seen. Cornwall is renowned for its gardens, not only with The Eden Project, but also The Lost Gardens of Heligan amongst many others, including National Trust properties such as the magnificent Lanhydrock House only three miles away. Walkers are also well catered for, with both coastal and inland walks a plenty. All these adult pursuits may leave the children feeling a little left out. There is so much for kids to do in Cornwall that there just isn't room to show you on this site, however we will happily point you in the right direction, be it theme parks, zoos, play areas, surfing or just good old fashioned bucket and spade places.
