Chycauster Ancient Village, Cornwall, English HeritageChysauster contains many of the hallmarks of the traditional Cornish village, right down to the street of neat stone cottages with terraced gardens. The remarkable thing is that the inhabitants moved out more than 2000 years ago.

The Celtic site on a windswept Cornish hillside is one of the oldest examples of a settlement resembling a modern village. There are the remains of eight surviving houses, built in pairs, with circular living rooms and smaller rooms off, which may have been used for storing food or keeping animals.

Roses around the door there may not have been, but everything else points to a well organised community and is a fascinating insight into how village life began.
