The
Penwith peninsula of Cornwall is at the most south westerly point
of Britain.
Mousehole, a few miles west of Penzance, is an ancient fishing
village on the beautiful south coast.
This part of Cornwall is famous for its magnificent coastline and
wild rugged moorlands. Within a few square miles there are many
ancient sites including holy wells and stone circles, such as the
Merry Maidens at Lamorna.
The area has long attracted artists and there are numerous galleries
including the Tate Gallery in St Ives.
The spectacular Minack open air theatre at Porthcurno is well worth
a visit, as is St Michael's Mount at Marazion. There are many gardens
to visit as well as the Eden Project near St Austell.
A rich variety of wild flowers and sub tropical plants grow in
the mild climate. Walking the coastal path is an ideal way to explore
the areas secret coves, small fishing harbours and expanses of golden
sand - if you're lucky you may even spot a dolphin!
The area offers an excellent choice for eating out from the more
traditional local fish restaurants to Mediterranean style cafes.
Penzance has a main line railway station as well as a helicopter
and boat service to the beautiful Isles of Scilly.
