PORTREATH CORNWALL Portreath is a small village nestling in a valley by a sandy cove and surrounded by high rugged cliffs. It has a friendly local community and has always been very popular with visitors and local people alike who appreciate its relaxed unspoilt atmosphere. People return year after year to enjoy easygoing family beach holidays or to relax in tranquil surroundings and explore Cornwall during the quieter months. The harbour was originally built during the 18th Century for the Cornish Mining Industry and is now used mainly by small fishing boats and leisure craft. It has an unhurried restful atmosphere and is an interesting place to explore. The harbour area is at the centre of the village, close to the shops, restaurants, pubs and next to the lovely cove and beach. Just a few minutes walk will take you up to the cliff-tops where there are wonderful views, fantastic scenery and miles of coastal footpath. Many lovely walks start from the village, one of which follows the old Mineral Tramway, which joins The Cornish Way network of cycling trails at Scorrier and continues on to Devoran on the South Coast. Just inland lies Tehidy Golf Course and the Country Park which has a lake, abundant wildlife and leafy woodland footpaths. Portreath makes an ideal base for touring Cornwall. St Ives and the Tate Gallery, Lands End, Penzance, Falmouth, Truro, the world famous Eden Project, beautiful Heligan Gardens, The Minack Theatre at Porthcurnow and many other well known places are all very easily accessible by car. Lovely beaches including those at Godrevy, Hayle Towans and Carbis Bay are only a few miles south past Hells Mouth and its massive cliffs and breathtaking drop into the sea. Porthtowan, Chapel Porth, St Agnes and Perranporth to the north are all excellent surfing beaches. A regular bus service runs in and out of the village and there are national coach and rail links at Redruth. For those with interested in tracing their 'Cornish Ancestry' during their visit the Cornish Studies Library is only 3 miles away in Redruth and the County Record Office is nearby in Truro.
