The Cornish Maritime Trust
Founded in 1994, the Trust has four historic working
vessels, which have been restored to sailing condition: the Barnabas,
a lug rigged mackerel driver based in Mousehole when not on 'tour',
Softwing, a gaff rigged oyster dredger based in Falmouth, Ellen, a
sprit rigged Gorran Haven crabber and Sea Urchin, a small replica
of the Ellen are also based in Mousehole. Between them they demonstrate
the most important rigs used in the 19th century Cornish fishing industry,
each with specific advantages for the type of fishing it was designed
for. Our members actively sail the boats as well as supporting the
preservation of our maritime heritage through educational projects
and social activities.
- Barnabas a 40ft St Ives mackeral driver with a dipping
lug built in 1881, she is the last of her kind.
- Soft Wing a 25ft Falmouth Oyster Dredger built in 1900
- Ellen an 18ft Goran Haven crabber built in 1882, she is
reportedly the fastest crabber ever built
- Sea Urchin, a replica of the Ellen. All the boats are actively
used by the members for anything from a day sail to a trip to Britanny.
